TN Vocational Rehabilitation Services

What is it?
Tennessee Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) is a federal and state-funded program providing services to help individuals with disabilities enter or return to employment. The program is administered through the Tennessee Department of Human Services, Division of Rehabilitation Services.

Eligibility
To qualify, applicants must have a physical or mental disability that results in a substantial barrier to employment, require VR services to prepare for, secure, retain, or regain employment, and be able to benefit from VR services. 

Applicants who receive SSI or SSDI benefits based on their own disability or blindness are presumed to be eligible if they intend to go to work. 

Services Offered
Program participants are assigned a team of VR professionals who collaborate with each customer to form an Individualized Plan for Employment according to the customer's career goals.

 Services provided include:
  • Counseling and guidance
  • Training
  • Transition services from school to work
  • Rehabilitation technology services
  • Job placement
  • Post-employment services
  • Supported employment

Training could include assistance with postsecondary or workplace readiness training, independent living skills development, assistive technology, transportation, and personal care assistance.

Employment services may include resume writing, interview training and practice, application assistance, and job coaching.
